Microsurgery

Microsurgery is a surgical method that allows the repair of very small vessels and nerves under magnification. The application area varies depending on the structure that needs to be repaired.

Overview

Microsurgery is not the name of a single surgery; It is a method used in complex losses caused by trauma, tumor treatment or congenital differences. Free tissue transfer, reattachment of the severed part, and some nerve repairs are examples of this approach. The goal is to replace the missing tissue and support possible function. Not every wound requires microsurgery; Direct closure, skin graft or adjacent tissue transfer may be sufficient. The decision is made by discussing the expected gain together with the surgical burden and the effects that may occur in the area where tissue will be removed. Complex cases require appropriate hospital infrastructure and joint evaluation of different specialties.

What is evaluated?

  • The extent and depth of tissue loss and the need for vessels or nerves are evaluated.
  • Circulation, previous surgeries, radiotherapy and nicotine use may affect planning.
  • Functional goal, general health, and suitability for long rehabilitation are considered together.

Approach and options

  • If more limited repair methods are sufficient, these are evaluated.
  • In appropriate cases, free tissue transfer with small vessel connections can be planned.
  • Nerve repair or replantation may require evaluation by a center with relevant experience.

Recovery and follow-up

In the initial period, the circulation of the repaired tissue and wound healing are closely monitored. Hospital stay and movement restrictions depend on the extent of the procedure. Tissue vitality and return of sensation or muscle strength are different processes. Rehabilitation is continued through a personal program followed by multiple specialists and therapists when necessary.
