Overview

Skin cysts may appear as rounded lumps beneath the skin. Epidermoid cysts and pilar cysts of the scalp are common examples. Although often called sebaceous cysts, not all lumps have the same structure, and they may be confused with lipomas. Growth, pain, recurrent inflammation or catching on a comb or clothing can affect the treatment decision. A red, painful cyst should first be assessed for infection. These findings determine the method and timing of removal. Squeezing or puncturing a cyst at home can increase infection. Scarring after surgical removal and the possibility of new cysts should be discussed.

What is evaluated?

  • The location of the mass, its growth rate, the opening in its center and previous attacks are evaluated.
  • Redness, pain, discharge and signs of infection are investigated.
  • The impact on daily function and the need for additional examination for diagnosis are determined.

Approach and options

  • Small and asymptomatic cysts with clear diagnosis can be observed.
  • In case of an inflamed cyst, appropriate infection treatment or necessary intervention can be planned first.
  • Recurrent or bothersome cysts can be surgically removed; tissue examination can be evaluated.

Recovery and follow-up

There may be local tenderness and limited swelling. Dressing, showering and stitching care are arranged according to the location and size of the wound. The area may need to be protected from friction and tension. The care process for an inflamed cyst may proceed differently; Evaluation should be sought for increased pain, redness, fever, or discharge.

Risks and limits

  • Wound infection or bleeding
  • Noticeable scarring and wound opening
  • Recurrence or new cyst formation in the same area
  • Changes in sensation depending on the location

The headings here do not cover all risks. Possible benefits, alternatives and personal risks should be discussed in detail during the examination.

You can ask in the consultation

  • Is this swelling a cyst or a different mass?
  • If there is inflammation, should the removal process be postponed?
  • What is the plan in terms of recurrence and pathology review?
